Phosphate is an important mineral used at 85–90% in fertilizer, 10-15% in feed, food, chemical and detergent industries. In our country, almost all of the phosphate, one of the main substances of fertilizers, is located in the GAP region. Mardin Mazıdağı region constitutes Turkey's most important phosphate field.
MTA continued its explorations until 1974 and determined/ detected the phosphate reserve in the Mazıdağı region.
The mission of "meeting the domestic phosphate rock need with domestic resources" was taken from MTA and given to Etibank during State planning Organization precaution covering the years 1974 and 1975.
The licenses of all phosphate deposits in the Mazıdağı Mardin Region have also been transferred to Etibank. Facility established in 1974 and commissioned in 1988. Although an investment of 125 million dollars was made, it was closed in 1994 on the grounds of "made a loss" after the decisions of April 5, 1994 were taken in the economic crisis.
As a result of the privatization made in 2011, the facility was transferred to T.M.C Mazıdağı Fosfatları San. Ve Tic. A.Ş. In 2014, the facility, was taken over by Cengiz Holding.
